Just another little bump lol

Earlier on in this thread are links to all 41 poems but here are the first few again.
I have split the poems into six groups and posted separately in here. All 41 poems are reproduced in an A4 size copied and comb-bound book being kindly sent out through the HDA price £2.50. http://www.hda.org.uk/shop/hda-books.php

I hope this also encourages others to get creative and use sites like Triond. One of my poems is called ‘Big Brother’. I’ve noticed the ‘hits’ have suddenly shot up on that one. I assume it must be from people searching for info on the latest celeb BB lol...

Hi Trish. I just want to say 'hello' and say you have done a wonderful thing with your poetry. I have only read 'The Carer'. It's so true! Poems seem as equally important to me as any lengthy books about HD. Thanks.

Good to hear about you again. Best wishes from Raphael

Hi Raphael,

It's lovely to hear from you and thanks for the kind words. I'm so glad you see poetry as important.

On the website I had also tried to make sure the description part gives the general public a bit more awareness. Example here is The Insurance Salesman where those with the gene face unfair descrimination.

In October 2000 Britain became the first country to approve the commercial use of gene technology to allow insurers to refuse cover or to push up premiums for those born with genes that could lead to fatal conditions. HD was singled out as the only case allowed immediate discrimination because of the reliability of the test. This meant for a person having tested “positive” insurers gained the right to refuse to insure or legally load the premium to extortionate levels (300% has been cited).

If, for example, a person took the test at 18 yet did not go on to develop the symptoms until 60 (late onset), they would face 42 years of unnecessary discrimination. There seems to have been no acceptance of the fact until symptoms start showing… the person with the gene does not have HD!

He’s looking at the paperwork,
He’s thinking of commission.
He’ll reach his bonus target soon,
Just one more sale he’s missing.

And this signed piece of paper,
Will take him to his score;
Be home in time for dinner,
So glad he chose this door.

But hold on, wait a minute,
What’s she put on that bit?
Genetic testing… Huntington’s’,
He nearly has a fit.

He grabs the piece of paper;
Ignores her look so sad.
She thinks that we’ll insure her life?
The woman must be mad!

Feel free to go onto the site guys and make comments (good or bad).

Oh... and Raphael... Take a look at the others when you get a chance. You may even spot the one you inspired.

Looking through the threads of this week has inspired me to write the below poem.

Hope you like

The rushed hush

Please speak to me, I am not deaf;
Please show me flowers, I am not blind.
Please take the time to listen more,
I simply have a slower mind.

Please stay with me a moment longer,
Your time's precious, mines' more so;
Please try to talk a little slower,
I get confused lest you talk slow.

Plese give me time to think a while,
It doesn't help when you cut in;
Please treasure sileince, not fill void,
Please watch my lips till speach begins.

Please feed me love, it makes me stronger,
To fight this illness in my head;
Please care for me a little longer,
Your time is plenty, when I'm dead.

Just a quick bump.

Apart from the poems in here (please go to start of thread and follow the links where given) I now have one of my poems reproduced on the Southend Branch site

http://www.hda-southend.org.uk/poetry-corner.html

Feel free to mail any of your poems to the website above or post up in here. They don't have to be HD directly related despite the name of this thread.

Latest offerring:

The innocent answer

“What will I be when I grow up?”,
The young boy asks his dad.
“Big and strong and happy my boy”
The father tells his lad.

The mother pulls her magazine,
Much closer to her head;
She’s hiding tears of sorrow now,
On hearing what was said.

She hasn’t even told the dad,
The secret she can’t hide;
She’s just discovered Huntington’s,
Was on her father’s side.

The father puts his son to bed,
“Now what were you going to say?”,
She puts down mag, face tear stained now;
“I’ll tell you about my day.”

I need your help guys, and I need you to be honest as it could be a costly mistake if people just say 'go for it' being polite and don't follow through.

As you may know I produced the full set of poems and presented it to the HDA who kindly agreed to print copies for £2.50 and distribute using their admin staff and photocopy/binding facilities.

Take up has been slow but I can live with that. In terms of HDA use of resources, given there is little if any profit in doing it that way and certainly very limited marketing (although a big THANK YOU applies to the HDA for taking it on and putting it on the site and HDA Newsletter) I have been thinking about other methods of getting it produced and sold.

I was listening to Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 yesterday and he had an article about self publishing sites. In particular he focused on Grosvenor House Publishing and there was a lot of good feedback on how they work. For a fee of about £1,000 they will work with authors to produce printed copies of books and get them out into the public arena getting advertised on sites like Amazon.Com and Waterstones.

Lots of other companies do similar packages. I note Jimmy Pollard used Lulu but, as they are an American company, the feedback has come back a bit hit and miss in terms of UK users.

At a very rough calculation, I think if I could get it published through Grosvenor at £4.99 retail price it would make about £1 profit after print and retail costs. To that end it would take 1,000 copies sold to recover my costs.

I'm prepared to take a bit of a loss in order to get it out there but obviously I can't afford the full £1,000 hit ANYTHING over the costs of producing etc (total profit after outgoings) would go to the HDA so if I sold more than 1,000 based on my rough costs it would be fantastic but I am a realist and know that could be years down the line

Here's where I need your help.

Over the next six weeks, could visitors to this site please take a look at some of the poems following the links on various posts further up this Thread and let me know if you think it's worthwhile persuing and, if published, would you be willing to buy when out there? I will also put up a link to a poem a day.

If I get 50 positive responses from individuals between now end September I will take a big leap of faith and go for it. If not, I will happily leave the status quo.

Whatever the case, I'd welcome comments in here or the TRIOND (Authspot)site who host my on-line poems and am very keen to have someone with a better grasp of grammar to spot the deliberate mistakes
