Default Swallowing Problems

Hi Everyone,

I’ve just joined the group, and thought i'd post a thread about some swallowing difficulties i've been having.

I'm 53 male who has been diagnosed with the faulty gene. I am having problems with my swallowing. I can't swallow food really at all, and have lost a lot of weight. A lot of the time I just can't swallow my own saliva, which if very scary and distressing. It seems that my swallow reflex has got something wrong with it. The doctors think its anxiety and have being given me diazapam I can drink liquids ok and have been living on complan, and black tea. Does anyone on here think this might be due to my HD diagnosis.

Warm Regards

Hi Rael

Your first post from the 4th has just popped up.
There are several past posts regarding swallowing issues and it is a common symptom of HD. My Hubs makes a gurgling sound all day/night which I assume is caused by his saliva and he has started to make a constant smacking/slurpy sound with his mouth. He struggles mainly swallowing liquids but frequently chokes and is worse when he is tired/agitated/anxious.

Perhaps your GP could refer you to a swallowing therapist? Welcome

Swallowing is a HD symptom, but could also be stress related. With HD it is usually both with liquids, which have to be thickened and solids which are puréed. As Shiraz suggest a referral to speech therapists advise on swallowing problems may help.
